5G Services to Roll Out in India in 2022
In 2022, India’s chosen cities will see the launch of 5G communication services. Gurugram, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jamnagar, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Pune, and Gandhinagar are among the cities slated to get 5G telecom services in 2022. 5G Services to Roll Out in India in 2022
Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea, among others, have installed 5G testing sites in these cities. “These metros and major cities will be the first locations in the nation to begin 5G services next year,” the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) said on Monday.
5G is the most recent generation of mobile broadband networks based on long-term evolution (LTE). While 4G was a significant advancement, enabling users to stream music and video on the move, 5G is meant to link a far broader range of devices than smartphones and delivers much increased speed and capacity.
Apart from the top telecom carriers and smartphone manufacturers, the government is actively assisting in the deployment of 5G services. The Department of Telecom has enlisted the assistance of top research institutes to develop and test 5G technologies.

Eight agencies – the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bengaluru, the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER), and the Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT) – are
Indigenous 5G Test Bed construction began in 2018 and is scheduled to conclude on December 31, 2021. The Department of Telecom funded the project. This project cost the department Rs224 crore. 5G Services to Roll Out in India in 2022
“The project, estimated to cost Rs 224 crore, is expected to be completed by December 31, 2021, paving the way for end-to-end testing of 5G User Equipments (UEs) and network equipment by 5G stakeholders in the country, including indigenous start-ups, SMEs, academia, and industry,” the Department of Telecom said.
The indigenous 5G test bed, a forward-thinking technology development project initiated in the telecom sector, will enable the development, testing, and proliferation of 5G technology system components and cross-sectoral use cases, as well as lay the groundwork for the country’s “6G Technology landscape,” it added. 5G Services to Roll Out in India in 2022
Earlier this month, Telecom Secretary K Rajaraman voiced anticipation for an early January rollout of the 5G test bed. “We expect to launch this 5G test bed in early January, allowing SMEs and other sectors of industry to come and test their solution on a functional platform,” Rajaraman stated on December 9 at India Mobile Congress.
The term “test bed” refers to the process of providing a controlled environment in which goods or services may be evaluated. It is comprised of hardware, software, the operating system, and the network setup. 5G Services to Roll Out in India in 2022
As testing nears completion, spectrum allocation will be important in determining the country’s commercial launch of 5G. The Department of Telecommunications has given spectrum for 5G testing to Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, and MTNL. Additionally, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, and Mavenir participated in the experiments.
The Department of Telecom (DoT) referred a reference to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in September 2021, seeking recommendations for the auction of spectrum identified for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)/ 5G, including a reserve price, band plan, block size, the quantum of spectrum to be auctioned, and auction conditions in the 526-698 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 (Industry 4.0). 5G Services to Roll Out in India in 2022
“The process of allocating frequencies to TSPs will begin as soon as feasible,” the DoT said.
5G operates primarily in three frequency bands: low, mid, and high. The speed is restricted to 100 Mbps in the low band spectrum. On the other hand, the mid-band spectrum delivers faster speeds than the low band but has restrictions in terms of coverage area and signal penetration. The high-band spectrum enables internet speeds of up to 20 Gbps. The greatest internet speed available in 4G is 1 Gbps. 5G Services to Roll Out in India in 2022
While 4G networks are primarily intended for phone use, 5G networks are intended for much more versatile use, obviating the need for numerous specialized networks. They can even act as several distinct networks – concurrently.
